RU’NAKO JOURNALS
FAQ'S

What is matrescence?

Matrescence is the physical, emotional, psychological and social transition of becoming a mother.

Much like adolescence describes the transition into adulthood, matrescence describes the changes that can happen as you move into and through motherhood  including shifts in identity, relationships, priorities, emotions and how you see yourself.

It can begin during pregnancy and continue well beyond the early postpartum period.

What is a matrescence journal?

A matrescence journal is a guided journal that focuses on the mother's transition through motherhood not only what is happening around her, but what is changing within her.

Milk, Tears & Matrescence uses guided reflection to explore identity shifts, emotional load, changing needs and the experience of becoming and being a mother.

What is the difference between a motherhood journal and a baby journal?

A baby journal typically focuses on recording a child's milestones, memories and development.

A guided motherhood journal focuses on the mother's experience.

Milk, Tears & Matrescence creates space for your thoughts, emotions, identity shifts and the parts of yourself that can become quieter while so much attention is focused on caring for your child.

Why journal your motherhood story?

Motherhood moves quickly. In the middle of everyday life, it can be easy to forget what you navigated, what you overcame, what you struggled with and how much you changed along the way.

Think of journaling with RU’NAKO as telling your story in your own words.

A journal gives you somewhere to capture not only what happened, but who you were while it was happening what you thought, what you felt, what mattered to you and who you were becoming.

Years from now, you can return to those pages and see how far you've come.

And one day, if you choose to keep or pass your journals on, they may offer your children something photographs can't always capture: a glimpse of who their mother was beyond being their mum.

There was a time when we might discover an old box of love letters, handwritten notes or journals belonging to our parents or grandparents and learn something about them we had never known.

So much of our lives now lives digitally. RU’NAKO gives you a place to leave some of yours in your own handwriting, in your own words.

Is Milk, Tears & Matrescence only for new or postpartum mums?

No. While Milk, Tears & Matrescence can be used during pregnancy, postpartum and early motherhood, it isn't limited to a particular stage.

Matrescence can continue as your child grows and your identity, relationships, priorities and needs continue to change.

Whether you're months or years into motherhood, you can begin wherever you are.

What kind of prompts are in Milk, Tears & Matrescence?

The journal includes guided prompts exploring identity, emotional load, what you're carrying, what you may need to release, the parts of yourself you remember and who you are becoming.

The prompts are designed to give you somewhere to begin without telling you how you should feel or requiring you to have everything figured out.

Do I need to journal every day?

No. Milk, Tears & Matrescence isn't designed around maintaining a perfect daily journaling routine.

You can return to it when you need space to reflect, process something you're carrying or simply check in with yourself.

Some days that may be a page. Other days it may only be a few lines.

What if I've never journaled before or don't know what to write?

You don't need any previous journaling experience.

Unlike a blank notebook, Milk, Tears & Matrescence provides guided prompts to give you a starting point. You can respond in a sentence, fill a page or simply sit with a question and return to it another day.

There is no right way to journal.

How can guided journaling support emotional wellbeing in motherhood?

Guided journaling can create space to slow down, put thoughts into words, recognise what you're carrying and reflect on your needs during a period of significant change.

Milk, Tears & Matrescence is designed as a reflective wellbeing tool rather than a clinical resource. It can sit alongside professional support when needed but isn't intended to diagnose or treat mental-health conditions.

Can I use Milk, Tears & Matrescence if I'm experiencing anxiety, overwhelm or low mood?

You can use the journal as a personal space for reflection during difficult or overwhelming seasons of motherhood.

However, Milk, Tears & Matrescence isn't a mental-health treatment and isn't intended to diagnose or treat postpartum depression, anxiety, psychosis or other mental-health conditions.

If you're concerned about how you're feeling, seek support from an appropriate healthcare professional.
